Skin after 40 · Hydration deep-dive

Your moisturizer isn't the problem.
Your skin is thirsty underneath it.

The layering mistake that's keeping your skin dry — and what actually works.

I used to slather on the richest, heaviest creams I could find. And every single morning, my skin still felt tight, dull, and parched. I thought I was doing everything right. I wasn't even close.

When I was on Accutane, it stripped every drop of oil from my skin. I went from oily to desert-dry practically overnight. I bought every heavy moisturizer on the market. Nothing worked. Then a friend told me to try a non-comedogenic oil — I started with rosehip. And for the first time, something actually helped. Eventually I discovered emu oil, and I've never looked back. It's the most deeply hydrating thing I've ever put on my face.

That experience taught me something most skincare brands don't tell you: moisture and hydration are not the same thing. And if you're treating the wrong one, you'll keep spending money on products that go nowhere.

And here's what makes it even more complicated for women over 40 — perimenopause. As estrogen starts to fluctuate, your skin loses collagen, elasticity, and its ability to hold onto moisture faster than ever. The dry, tight, dull skin you're fighting isn't just about your routine. Your hormones are actively working against you. Understanding what's happening beneath the surface is the first step to fixing it.

Dry vs. dehydrated — and why it matters

This is the distinction that changes everything for women over 40. Most of us have both — at the same time — and we're only treating one of them.

Dry skin

  • Lacks oil
  • Flaky or rough patches
  • Uncomfortable all day
  • Tight regardless of products

Dehydrated skin

  • Lacks water
  • Dull, tired-looking
  • Fine lines look deeper
  • Makeup sits patchy and dry

See the problem? If your skin is dehydrated, applying a moisturizer is like putting a lid on an empty pot. There's nothing there to seal in. You need water in the skin first — then you seal it.

The order that actually works

Mature skin needs layers, not just one heavy product. Here's the sequence that makes moisturizer finally do its job:

1
Hydrating toner or essence — floods the skin with water first
2
Serum — delivers actives deep (hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamins C + E)
3
Moisturizer — seals everything in
4
Facial oil — the final barrier, especially critical at night

Skip step one, and the rest barely works. That's the step most women over 40 are missing entirely.

The oil that changed everything for me

Emu oil is part of my nighttime routine without exception. Unlike most oils, it absorbs deeply rather than sitting on the surface. It mimics the lipids your skin naturally produced in your 20s and 30s — but produces far less of now. The difference in how my skin feels the next morning is not subtle.

If nothing is working — check your barrier

When skin stays dry no matter what you throw at it, the real issue is usually a damaged skin barrier. This is one of the most common — and most overlooked — problems for women over 40.

Years of retinol, over-exfoliation, and harsh cleansers wear the barrier down. When it's compromised, no product can do its job — because everything you apply leaks right back out. Signs you're dealing with this: stinging when you apply products, sudden sensitivity, tightness that doesn't go away, redness that seems to come from nowhere.

The fix is not more products. It's recovery. That's exactly why I built recovery nights into my skin cycling routine — your skin cannot glow if it never gets to heal.

My PM routine when my skin is begging for help

1
Gentle cleanser — nothing stripping, nothing harsh
2
Hydrating toner — AM bottle in the morning, PM bottle at night
3
5-in-1 Powerful Face Serum — hyaluronic acid, collagen, niacinamide, vitamins C + E
4
Rich moisturizer — lock in the layers beneath
5
Emu oil — the final, non-negotiable step
6
Bamboo Charcoal Collagen Eye Patches — if my under-eyes need extra love

Within a few days of this routine, my skin is visibly softer, calmer, and actually hydrated. Not just coated. Hydrated.

What I reach for
