✨ Glow From Within™
Microneedling can be one of the most effective ways to support mature skin.
It may help improve:
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin firmness
- Uneven texture
- Enlarged pores
- Dullness
- Collagen production
But there is one major mistake many women make:
They assume deeper means better.
It doesn't.
Especially for mature skin and ethnic skin, more aggressive treatment can sometimes create more irritation, longer healing, and increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The goal is not to attack your skin.
The goal is to support it.
🌿 Why Ethnic Skin Needs More Caution
Darker and ethnic skin tones are often more prone to:
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
- Lingering dark marks after irritation
- Uneven tone after over-treatment
- Slower barrier recovery
This does not mean ethnic skin cannot benefit from microneedling.
In fact, microneedling is often one of the safer options for ethnic skin because it stimulates collagen without the same level of heat or peeling associated with some stronger resurfacing treatments.
The key is staying conservative.
Controlled stimulation helps the skin rebuild.
Too much trauma can leave skin looking worse instead of better.
💉 My At-Home Microneedling Routine
I personally microneedle at home using my Dr. Pen.
For my acne scars, I do not go deeper than 1.0 mm — and I do not recommend going deeper at home.
For mature skin, 1.0 mm is usually enough to stimulate collagen and help soften acne scars without creating unnecessary irritation.
More depth does not automatically mean better results.
Consistency matters far more.
These are the depths I stay within:
- Forehead: 0.25–0.5 mm
- Under eyes: 0.25 mm maximum
- Nose: 0.25–0.5 mm
- Cheeks and acne-scarred areas: up to 1.0 mm
- Neck: 0.25–0.5 mm
Anything deeper than 1.0 mm is best left to a professional.
🏥 Professional vs. At-HomeYou want to needle deeper than 1.0 mm Microneedling
Professional microneedling may be the better choice if:
- You have deeper acne scars
- You are treating active hyperpigmentation or melasma
- You are unsure how your skin reacts
In-office providers may safely use deeper settings for certain concerns.
However, for many women with mature skin, at-home microneedling done carefully and consistently can still create beautiful results.
The difference is that home treatments should remain gentle and controlled.
🧴 Prep Work Before You Microneedle
One of the biggest reasons women end up with prolonged redness or pigmentation is because they start microneedling when their skin barrier is already irritated.
For mature skin — especially ethnic skin — prep is essential.
For 1–2 weeks before treatment, focus on:
- Gentle cleansing
- Hydration
- Moisturizer
- Daily SPF
- Barrier support
Avoid for 5–7 days before:
- Retinol or tretinoin
- Strong acids
- Exfoliating scrubs
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Harsh peels
You want your skin calm before you create controlled stimulation.
If you have medium, olive, tan, brown, or deeper skin, prep work should include a pigment inhibitor for 2–4 weeks before microneedling. This matters because microneedling creates controlled inflammation, and ethnic skin is more likely to respond to that inflammation by producing excess pigment, leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or darker spots that can last for months.
A pigment inhibitor helps calm that response before it starts. Look for ingredients like tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin, kojic acid, niacinamide, azelaic acid, or a melanin inhibitor such as Platinum Skincare’s Fade Bright. Using it consistently before and after microneedling can dramatically reduce your risk of darkening and help you heal more evenly.
✨ What I Use During Microneedling
For years, I used a high molecular weight hyaluronic acid serum during microneedling because it gave the pen enough slip to move comfortably across the skin.
Recently, I switched to Platinum Skincare's ALQEMI Micro Infusion Suite with EXO-EHR.
For me, it works better than plain hyaluronic acid because it does more than provide glide.
It helps:
- Improve slip during treatment
- Reduce drag and irritation
- Support faster recovery
- Deliver active ingredients more effectively
Microneedling can increase product penetration dramatically.
That means what you use during treatment matters.
Instead of only creating channels in the skin, I want those channels to be filled with ingredients that support healing and collagen production.
🔄 What Microneedling Can Improve
With consistency, microneedling may help improve:
- Acne scars
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Crepey texture
- Dull skin
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven texture
- Mild skin laxity
Microneedling works by encouraging the skin to produce more collagen and elastin over time.
That is why results do not happen overnight.
You may need:
- 3–6 sessions for glow and texture
- 6–12 sessions for acne scars
- 4–6 weeks between treatments
One of the biggest mistakes people make is microneedling too often.
At 1.0 mm, your skin needs time to rebuild.
🌙 What I Use After Microneedling
Immediately after treatment, I keep my routine simple.
I focus on hydration and barrier support first.
Once my skin is no longer actively irritated — usually the next day — I follow with my 5-in-1 Powerful Face Serum.
I love it after microneedling because it supports:
- Hydration from hyaluronic acid
- Smoother-looking skin
- Collagen support
- Antioxidant protection from vitamins C and E
- Brighter, healthier-looking skin
My simple post-treatment routine:
- Gentle cleanser
- Thin layer of my 5-in-1 Powerful Face Serum
- Nourishing moisturizer
-
SPF the next morning
⚠️ What NOT To Use Right After Microneedling
For 3–5 days after treatment, avoid:
- Retinol
- Tretinoin
- Strong vitamin C
- Glycolic acid
- Salicylic acid
- Chemical peels
- Exfoliants
- Heavily fragranced products
If you use strong products too soon, you increase the risk of irritation, burning, and hyperpigmentation.
🕊️ A Gentle Reminder
You do not need to force your skin to change.
Especially after 40, skin responds better to consistency than intensity.
Gentle microneedling, thoughtful prep, and proper aftercare can do far more for your skin than chasing deeper, harsher treatments.
Support your skin.
Give it time.
Allow collagen to build slowly.
That is where lasting glow comes from.
✨ Glow From Within™
Healthy, radiant skin after 40 is rarely created through aggressive treatments alone.
It comes from respecting your skin, understanding what it needs, and giving it the support to heal beautifully.
Microneedling can be an incredible tool for mature skin when it is done with patience, caution, and intention.
Glow is not created by doing the most.
It is created by doing what your skin truly needs.
